David Herbert Lawrence letters, 1916-1929.

A collection of 31 letters and postcards by D.H. Lawrence to British artist Mark Gertler, from St. Ives, Cornwall; Newbury, Bershire; Wirksworth, Derbyshire; Paris; New York; New Mexico; and Florence, Italy. The bulk of the letters originate from the English counryside during World War I where Lawrence writes about his possible military service and dislike of the war, health and financial problems, Gertler's work, and mutual friends.

David Herbert Richards Lawrence was born September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, near Nottingham, to Arthur Lawrence, a coal miner, and Lydia Beardsall. He attended Nottingham University College, and in 1908 he took a teaching position at Davidson Road School in Croydon. Lawrence wrote in his spare time, and in 1911, with the help of Ford Maddox Hueffer, he published his first novel, The White Peacock .
